old – Story and Pictures By Film

Story and Pictures By is a feature-length documentary film about the power and reach of children’s picture books, created by Emmy-nominated director Joanna Rudnick.

Picture books are what put our kids to bed at night; teach them to question their worlds and find wonder; and turn them into citizens of the future.

At a time when everything is becoming digital, we are producing more children’s picture books than ever before. This film will get to the heart of why that is through the stories of three of the world’s top author/illustrators—Yuyi Morales, Christian Robinson, and Mac Barnett. They represent a new generation of authors and illustrators from diverse backgrounds who are transforming the genre with hero/heroines of color and characters from varying economic and cultural backgrounds.

In addition to Yuyi, Christian, and Mac’s stories, this film focuses on the children’s picture book itself. How is a book made? Who makes them? How do their messages impact our children? Told through a combination of live-action and animated sequences, Story and Pictures By the documentary takes us on a journey through the wonder and whimsy of childhood.
